Southern Huron County residents looking to improve their English language skills will have the opportunity to attend free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes this winter. The in-person classes, set to take place on Saturdays in Dashwood, aim to enhance speaking, listening, and reading abilities for participants.
The program, developed by Set7 Skills and Technology North Perth and Region, is designed to cater to different proficiency levels. Two classes will be offered: a beginner Level 0-2 class and a Level 2-3 class that focuses on workplace English. Participants will receive a course workbook and necessary supplies at no cost.
“There are two classes offered based on your current level of English, beginner Level 0-2 and Level 2-3 focused on English in the workplace. Course workbook and supplies will be provided,” explained Erin Bewick, Training Coordinator from Set 7. “Set7’s ESL classes have been highly beneficial to new residents in North Perth. We are excited to continue to grow and partner with our neighbouring municipalities and counties.”
This initiative marks the return of in-person ESL programming to Huron County after a nearly two-year hiatus. The classes are funded through a partnership between the Huron County Economic Development Board and the Municipality of South Huron.
“We are fortunate to have many workers come to our community who help businesses succeed," said South Huron Mayor George Finch. "When there are opportunities for people to improve their English language skills, they can contribute more to their work environment and to the community. As well, it gives all of us an opportunity to learn from each other.”
The program aims to address local workforce shortages by supporting international workers in enhancing their communication skills.
“We know that Huron County has workforce shortages,” added Huron County Economic Development Board Chair Bryan Vincent. "When we support international workers, who come here to help our businesses, improve their communication skills, we demonstrate that we value their contribution and want to increase their chances of building a permanent future in our community."
