Bundle up! Snow, bitter cold in store for Thursday

It's a winter weather double whammy for parts of midwestern Ontario.

In addition to experiencing frigid temperatures, the area will get more snow on Thursday.

Northern Huron and Bruce County are expected to receive 5 to 15 centimetres of snowfall.

Environment Canada has both regions under a winter weather travel advisory as snow squalls are expected to intensify once again in the morning. They will primarily impact areas near the shores of Lake Huron and the Bruce peninsula throughout the day.

By the evening, winds will become northwesterly causing the squalls to shift southward to areas southeast of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Environment Canada anticipates the snow squalls will gradually weaken before midnight.

Much of midwestern Ontario has had to deal with snow squalls since the start of the week.

Huron-Perth Public Health is also advising that bitter cold temperatures will also be an issue. The health unit issued a cold warning for Thursday as temperatures combined with the windchill will make it feel like near minus 20 C.

Anyone who will be spending time outside is advised to wear extra layers and watch for signs of cold-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia. The cold poses a greater health risk to people experiencing homelessness, seniors, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions such as heart or lung disease.

"For relief from cold temperatures locally, check with your municipality to find available warming spaces

near you," the health unit said.

Temperatures will rise back above the freezing mark Friday, with Environment Canada calling for a daytime high of 1 C.
