Flag Plaza To Expand

It's a unique way to recognize a birthday or an anniversary or to celebrate the life of a loved one.

Rotary Club of Sarnia Bluewaterland spokesman Pat Voegelin says the club is planning a fourth expansion of its flag plaza north of the Blue Water Bridge.

"There had been so much interest in the plaza," says Voegelin. "We have been blessed with its location along the water. People going for a stroll can see the stones because it's just a prime location."

Voegelin says two types of stones are sold for the base of the flag court.

"The small red stones are eight inches by four inches and they cost $100 and that includes the cost of inscription," says Voegelin. "The larger 16-by-16 inch white stones cost $500 plus an additional $50 for the artwork on the stones."

Pending pre-sales, work on the 100 ft expansion to the north of the plaza will begin in the fall of 2019 and wind up in the spring of 2020.

95% of the proceeds will help fund the playground and garden in Centennial Park.

The plaza opened in 2004 as a tribute to emergency responders on both sides of the border.
