Changes being made to Durham's hospital

South Bruce Grey Health Centre (SBGHC) says it is moving hospital beds from Durham to Walkerton and Kincardine as part of what it calls “action to address the healthcare needs of the Durham community.”

As of June 3, 10 of the Durham Hospital's inpatient beds will be relocated to Walkerton and Kincardine. SBGHC believes this will provide patients in need of inpatient care with more consistent, safe, and high-quality services.

"This decision has been made with our community and the patients we serve at the top of mind, with no impact to jobs," said Nancy Shaw, CEO and President of SBGHC.

According to a news release from SBGHC, nursing staff will continue to work in Durham's emergency department from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Moving the inpatient beds is meant to allow for Durham hospital staff to have greater focus on emergency care. SBGHC assures that they will work with patients and their families closely to ensure an easy transition.

"Our priority is the well-being and safety of our patients, staff, and communities" Shaw said. "We are committed to navigating these changes collaboratively, and we thank our community, staff, and physicians for their ongoing support and understanding as we renew our vision for care across all SBGHC sites."

SBGHC plans to host community engagement sessions in the coming months to get public feedback on strategies to stabilize area hospitals and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care. Dates, times, and locations for these sessions have yet to be decided.
