Service dog joins Stratford Police Service

The Stratford Police Service (SPS) says a graduate of the National Service Dogs’ Facility Dog Program is joining the force.

NSD Dusty was donated to the local police service thanks in part to funding from Wounded Warriors Canada.

In a media release, SPS said Dusty will work alongside investigators, front-line members, and social workers to provide emotional support to the citizens of Stratford, St Marys, and Perth South.

She is the first Facility Dog in the Stratford service's history, but the program has found success with other police services across Canada.

"In the last several years, we have had the opportunity to witness the incredible impact these dogs have on those they serve," said Rachel Braden, a social worker and the primary handler of Dusty. "They bring light in the darkest of times and provide a type of support that transcends what humans can provide."

Dusty will also dedicate time to the first responder community, offering support in the wake of critical incidents, and simply during day-to-day engagement with first responders.

"Tragic events can happen to anyone at any time. We may not be able to eliminate the trauma that comes with tragedy, but we can try to mitigate it through the provision of member and community support," said SPS Chief Greg Skinner. "Rachel and Dusty are another resource that the Stratford Police will be able to draw on to support people in vulnerable situations, build positive relationships between the police and the community, assist victims of crime through the investigation and prosecution processes and enhance public trust."
