Police in Wellington County are warning residents about a “sextortion” scam after a close call involving a local victim.
Wellington County OPP say officers responded December 14 after a resident reported being extorted by someone they had met through a social media platform. Police say the victim had sent intimate photos, and was later threatened with having those images shared with friends and family unless money was paid.
OPP say the victim did the right thing by cutting off contact, blocking and reporting the account, and contacting police.
Sextortion involves criminals using intimate images or videos to demand money or other concessions. Police are reminding residents not to engage with strangers online and never to share intimate images.
Anyone who receives similar threats is urged to stop communicating immediately, not comply with the demands, and contact police. Residents are also advised to save messages, usernames, and account details as evidence.
The OPP can be reached at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can be made through Crime Stoppers.
