Two Hungarian nationals are facing charges in relation to a rash of thefts from retail stores in Perth, Huron, and Grey counties.
Hanover police were called about a man shoplifting several items from the local pharmacy just before 7 p.m. on Monday. The man ran from the drug store into a nearby bush lot before being pickup by a woman in an awaiting vehicle.
West Grey police stopped the suspect vehicle near Durham and arrested two people. The pair were transported back to Hanover police as the investigation continued.
"A search of the suspects' vehicle uncovered nearly $5,000 worth of stolen merchandise, including baby formula, headphones, perfumes, tools, and a chainsaw, that were taken from various stores in Perth, Huron and Grey counties earlier in the day," police said in a statement.
A 27-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, who currently live in Toronto but are Hungarian nationals, are charged with two counts of possession of stolen property. The man is additionally charged with four counts of theft under $5,000, while the woman is additionally charged with accessory after the fact to theft.
The pair have been released from custody and will appear in Walkerton court to answer to the charges in the near future.
The vehicle reportedly used in the getaway has been seized and will remain at a secure impound lot at the owner's expense until court proceedings are finished, or otherwise directed by the courts, police said.
