South Bruce Peninsula Mayor resigns after offensive comments

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula says Mayor Garry Michi has tendered his resignation from office, effective immediately.

Michi leaves office as a result of audio that was leaked on Friday, Aug. 25, in which he made disparaging remarks about the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation community.

According to Danielle Edwards, Manager of Economic Development and Communications, Michi tendered his resignation to the Town's CAO around 10:30 a.m. on August 29.

In announcing his resignation, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula once again issued an apology to the Chippewas of Nawash and all First Nations communities.

Council had a special meeting planned for the afternoon of August 30, after a notice of motion was filed by Coun. Caleb Hull asking for Michi to resign.

That meeting has now been cancelled, but another will be planned soon to determine next steps.

Edwards says in the absence of a Mayor, Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland assumes all duties.

Michi has not responded to a request for comment.
