SFN and Bruce County latest to condemn Garry Michi's comments

Saugeen First Nation and Bruce County have both released statements condemning comments by South Bruce Peninsula's mayor that were leaked late last week.

An audio clip was released on the morning of Aug. 25 by an anonymous Soundcloud account that recorded Mayor Garry Michi making disparaging remarks about the Chippewas of Nawash First Nations community.

(Content warning: the linked audio contains potentially upsetting material.)

The clip included comments about receiving federal funding for a new water treatment plant in Cape Croker.

South Bruce Peninsula's Director of Communications confirmed that the Town validated the audio clip with Mayor Michi prior to issuing an official statement on Friday evening.

This weekend, council for the Chippewas of Nawash called for the resignation of Michi.

Saugeen First Nation said in a statement that they will "support the Nawash and carefully consider what steps will be necessary to address this situation and in a way that will minimize the harm that this mayor's words have caused."

Bruce County council said the comments don't reflect their views and issued a sincere apology to the Nawash and all First Nations.

Mayor Michi has yet to respond to a request for a comment.
