Parking changes this summer at Sauble Beach

Saugeen First Nation is planning to keep vehicles off Sauble Beach this year.

The First Nation owns the south end of Sauble Beach, where people park to walk to the beach, and will no longer offer parking on the beach in the area near the famous "Welcome to Sauble Beach" sign.

In 2018, a child was hit in the area by a vehicle while playing on the beach and cottagers in the area had reportedly been fed up with a beach full of vehicles.

South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson said she just learned about the decision but admitted she had an inkling that the band planned to stop parking in the area after a parking booth was removed last year.

Saugeen First Nation Chief Lester Anoquot said bylaw officers will enforce trespassing and parking rules throughout the summer months.

Most beaches in Ontario, including Wasaga Beach and Grand Bend, also ended beach parking in recent years.
