CK council approve renoviction by-law

The municipality has moved forward with a renoviction by-law.

A renoviction is when a landlord evicts a tenant to renovate the unit and rent it out at a higher price.

On Monday night, council reviewed the public engagement and the draft renoviction by-law.

Staff said there was quite a lot of community engagement, from both local landlords and tenants.

The presentation also shed light on the cost associated with the by-law, as more staff would be required to go through the licensing.

After hearing the review, Councillor Marjorie Crew put forward a motion to adopt the by-law.

Her motion, seconded by Councillor Alysson Storey, directed administration to pursue advocacy efforts with Ontario, recommending a province-wide approach to reducing renovictions.

It also approved the proposed Rental Renoviction By-Law be adopted on October 1.

The by-law would require landlords to obtain a license if repairs or renovations need the tenant to vacate the unit.

After announcing her motion, Crew thanked everyone for their help, including the residents of Terrace Forty who were served renoviction notices at the beginning of 2026.

“The Terrace 40 situation made me aware of how devastating these N-13 evictions could be,” said Crew. “This covers gaps that have been used to misuse the N-13 process.”

Crew was supported by several councillors who also thanked everyone involved.

The motion was passed by council 18 to zero.
