Women's addictions treatment centre gets funding to expand services

The House of Sophrosyne is getting an increase in its annual funding to improve outpatient addiction services.

The addiction treatment centre for women will now receive $352,827 annually, an increase of $58,884.

"To receive base funding, that means we don't have to worry about, in a couple years, what are we going to do with that program and how we are going to fund it. Knowing that that's going to be there permanently is a huge relief," said Executive Director Karen Waddell.

With the additional funding, the House of Sophrosyne will add more evening treatment programming, grandparent support groups, and childcare services for mothers attending day programs.

"It's going to remove such a barrier because as we know women, they want to access programs but they're not going to put their children at risk if they don't have anybody suitable to watch them. So now they will," said Waddell.

The House of Sophrosyne is still hoping for additional funding to expand its in-house treatment program for women and families.

"That will allow moms to be able to come in and live with their children in those beds, it will double our bed space. That's what we still need," said Waddell.

The additional funding comes from the province's efforts to expand Rapid Access Addictions Medicine Clinics and Addictions Day/Evening Treatment programs.

"It's important that we provide that support from the government," said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie. "The Roadmap to Wellness program is one that envisions expanding the services throughout the community."
