Owen Sound police zeroing in on public drug use and trafficking downtown, arrested nearly a dozen people over a two-day period this week.
The targeted enforcement initiative on Wednesday and Thursday used both uniform and plainclothes officers from the Criminal Investigations Branch, Drug Enforcement Unit, and C.O.R.E. Unit.
Undisclosed quantities of suspected fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine were seized during the crackdown. In total, 11 people were taken into custody and charged in relation to offences involving the illicit drugs.
During the initiative, police found an unresponsive middle-aged man who appeared to be experiencing a drug-related medical emergency. He regained consciousness after officers administered Naloxone.
"This incident highlights the importance of officers being prepared to respond to the serious and potentially fatal consequences of illicit drug use while conducting proactive enforcement in the community," police said in a statement. It went on to state that the Owen Sound Police Service recognizes that substance use and addition are complex issues also requires support.
"The [police] service continues to work with community, health and social service partners to connect individuals experiencing substance use challenges with appropriate supports," police said.
