Road construction ramping up in Windsor

It's about to get harder to drive around the city as construction season ramps up in Windsor.

Projects on College Avenue, Peter Street, Erie Street, Caron Avenue, Windsor Avenue, and Riverside Drive East start Monday, May 4, and that's only a fraction of the work planned for Wards 2, 3, and 4 this year.

There's around $12 million in the City of Windsor's 2026 capital budget dedicated to road projects in those three wards.

The projects address local, collector, and arterial roads.

A milling and paving project along Riverside Drive East between Goyeau Street and Devonshire Road is expected to have a big impact.

"That's going to be a big one, and it's a road that a lot of people travel every single day. It's one of the biggest roads in the city so that's going to be one that will have a big impact," said Ward 4 Councillor Mark McKenzie.

The project will start on May 4 and is expected to wrap up in June.

Road reconstruction work on Peter Street from Mill Street to South Street also gets underway on Monday. This project includes a combination of road reconstruction, mill and pave work, and a new water main installation.

"The street got a little beat up during the Gordie Howe Bridge community benefit work, where all the buses moved off of Sandwich Street onto Peter and stuff like that, so rehabbing that road in through Sandwich Road is going to be really good for the west end," said Ward 2 Councillor Frazier Fathers.

The City of Windsor previously announced over $3-million of road work planned for Ward 1 this construction season.

Over $36.6 million will be invested in 2026 in roads throughout the community.

"You are going to see a lot of road construction happening this year throughout the entire city because we have the largest capital budget and the largest road rehab budget in the city's history playing out in 2026," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

A list of projects scheduled for Wards 2, 3, and 4 can be found on the City of Windsor's website.
