Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say two people have been arrested after they allegedly tried to rip off a local senior.
Soon after 1 p.m. on Thursday, a resident on Fairview Avenue East in Essex got a call from someone who said that her grandson was in trouble.
The caller tried to convince the resident to withdraw money to cover legal fees, and that two people would be sent to collect the money.
A neighbour realized that the situation was a scam, and police were called. Officers arrived and arrested the pair who came to collect.
A 35-year-old and a 39-year-old, both from Windsor, are each charged with fraud under $5,000.
Both were held pending a bail hearing. The charge has not been proven in court.
Police are using this incident to remind people to never give personal information to someone they don't know, and that legitimate lawyers or police officers will never send a courier to collect a payment.
"The Essex County OPP reminds the public to be vigilant about frauds targeting seniors," said OPP Constable Chris Ciliska in a media release. "If you or someone you know receives a suspicious call requesting money, verify the information with a trusted family member and contact police immediately."
