The City of Windsor is taking another step to keep downtown's street clean of trash and debris.
New trash enclosures are being installed in the downtown core. The bins are made for high-traffic urban environments and include a on-way deposit system.
"We now embark on tackling litter and debris with the introduction of these fully enclosed metroSTOR bins that have a proven track record in other large modern cities across North America and Europe to reduce litter and debris blowing around streets and alleyways by keeping these materials firmly secured in the bins until collection can occur,” said Jim Leether, manager of Environmental Services at the City of Windsor.
Earlier this summer, the city also deployed a street vacuum that is utilized by city staff to clean up trash and debris from alleys and city streets.
The city also provided members of the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Area with lockable rollout garbage carts in December.
All of these initiatives are part of the "Curb the Trash" campaign to help clean up the core.
“The basic principles of Strengthen the Core are keeping our community clean, beautiful, and safe. This initiative takes action to make our downtown cleaner. That’s something we can lead on, and it matters. A clean downtown sends a message, to residents, business owners, and visitors, that we care about this place. It builds pride and momentum. I’m excited to see the impact of these new bins,” said Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino.
