W.F. Herman Academy, It Is

You'll easily recognize the name of Windsor's newest J.K.-to-Grade 12 school.

Trustees with the Greater Essex County District School Board have voted to change the name of W.F. Herman Secondary School only slightly, to W.F. Herman Academy when it re-opens in the fall with a wing for elementary school students.

They had five to choose from: Herman Academy, Herman-McCallum Academy, Herman Renaissance Academy and Griffin Academy, a nod to the school's mascot.

Harry Lumley is a retired teacher and football coach at Herman Secondary School, and he believes graduates will be pleased with the trustees' choice.

"That's what we wanted all along," he says. "There's so much tradition there and what we were worried about is they were going to throw out 60 years of tradition."

The new school will accommodate French Immersion students currently attending Percy P. McCallum Elementary School. McCallum will be the new home for students at Gordon McGregor Public School.
