Renovations to enhance safety and extend the lifespan of the aquatic centre in St. Marys are on track to be completed on schedule, clearing the way for the pool to be reopened this fall.
The facility, located within the Pyramid Recreation Centre, was closed for the facelift in November 2024, after it was discovered saltwater and high humidity had caused structural issues. The cause of the damage stemmed from insufficiently sized HVAC equipment installed during the original construction. Updates to the space have included the installation of HVAC ductwork and commissioning of the HVAC system, installation of new windows, and new paint to the pool space, change rooms and lockers.
On Friday, town officials announced that once all scaffolding has been removed, tile work will be completed and new floor drains and HVAC air inlets will be install. As it stands now the scaffolding should be removed by mid-September.
"We understand that people are eager to come back, and we are dedicated to completing the renovations to ensure the aquatics centre improvements endure,” said Stephanie Ishe, the town's director of community services.
Ahead of fall, lifeguards and staff will be recruited and trained so they are ready to welcome community members back to the aquatic centre once it reopens. Until then, the Pyramid Recreation Centre will continue to remain open for regular hours and continue to offer a variety of recreation and leisure activities.
A reopening date for the updated facility is expected to be announced soon via the town's website and social media channels.
