Sarnia Alzheimer’s walk aims for $130K as local need surges

Hundreds of people are expected to participate in the IG Wealth Management Walk For Alzheimer's Sunday, May 31.

Alzheimer's Society Sarnia-Lambton Fund Development and Communications Manager Marie Marcy-Smids said it will be held at Sarnia's Suncor Agora in Centennial Park.

"Check in starts at 8:30 a.m.," she said. "We are looking for 540 walkers this year, which is a little bit of a jump from last year and our campaign goal is $130,000."

Marcy-Smids said over 460 walkers had registered by the beginning of the week, and sign ups continue at SarniaAlzWalk.ca

"It's a beautiful five kilometre walk along the St. Clair River," Marcy-Smids said. "We have live entertainment this year from The Duo Fischer and Lovatt. There's going to be a lot going on and if you're not a walker, just come down and enjoy the festivities."

She said they have a number of things planned to run alongside the main event.

"If you're not a walker, you could come down and have the pancake/sausage breakfast," she said. "It's very much in the Mackinac [Pancake Breakfast] style. Actually, we use the Rotary's grills and we've got Home Instead grilling for us. There's kids activities, there's face painting, we'll have Cycling Without Age there."

Marcy-Smids said all of the money raised stays local, supporting families in Sarnia-Lambton.

"There are 3,500 people diagnosed over the age of 65, but for every one of those diagnosed, there are two care partners," she said. "So, that raised the number of people affected by this disease to 10,500 people locally, which is a large amount. So, we're seeing unprecedented numbers needing support and services."

The local chapter is marking its 40th anniversary this year.
