Teamsters issues 72-hour strike notice to CN Rail

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) has issued a strike notice to Canadian National Railway Co. (CN).

In a letter Friday morning, the union representing about 6,500 CN Rail conductors, conductor trainees, yard coordinators and locomotive engineers, said it intends to withdraw its members' services at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 26.

The letter states the union does not believe that any of the matters that have been discussed during negotiations over the last few days are impossible, and is open to further talks.

The strike notice follows Thursday's announcement by Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon that the federal government ordered binding arbitration in the labour dispute after CN locked out employees in the absence of a new deal.

He also said terms of the current collective agreements will be extended until new ones can be agreed upon and CN and CPKC railway operations will resume.

Both companies' labour agreements expired at the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, Teamsters said the work stoppage at Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd (CPKC) remains ongoing pending an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board.
