Ball diamond upgrades planned in Petrolia

It's good news for baseball players in and around Petrolia.

The town is moving ahead with ball diamond upgrades at Greenwood Park, and has plans for future upgrades at Greenwood, Bridgeview, and Kerr parks.

During this month's council meeting, council endorsed a plan to replace Diamond 2 dugouts at Greenwood. It also endorsed placing funds in next year's budget for further improvements at all three parks.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, Communications Director Laurissa Ellsworth said each dugout will cost approximately $15,500, not including the new benches.

"The work will start as soon as possible and take about four weeks to complete," said Ellsworth. "New foul line fencing will be installed in front of the bleachers."

Across the three parks, the town is looking at fencing repairs, new distance signs, base plugs and foul posts, improved drainage, and upgraded dugouts. Staff are currently working on pricing and quotes to be included in the 2024 capital budget.

Ellsworth said Greenwood Park diamonds have been in existence for over 50 years.

"[During that time] they have accommodated fastball, two-pitch and currently a hardball diamond with a grass infield," she said. "Kerr Park has been a ball diamond for over 30 years. New ball diamond lights were installed in Greenwood Park in 2015."
