Record number of pet owners turning to Humane Society for help

The high cost of living has led an all-time high number of pet owners to seek help from the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth.

According to figures released by the non-profit organization on Wednesday, over the first two months of the year its community outreach team provided 120 animals with medical care, delivered more than $16,000 worth of essential veterinary services and vaccinations, and helped families in financial need with supplies for 1,510 pets. Demand for these outreach services has never been higher, according to the Humane Society.

“The overwhelming need for accessible pet care and food is rising alongside the cost of living,” Victoria Baby, the organization's chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring that no pet goes without the care they deserve, but the growing demand highlights the urgent need for more resources and support.”

Outreach has been expanded through the Better Together Capital Campaign, which allows the humane society to provide life-saving medical care, food assistance, and education to families who might otherwise be forced to surrender their pet.

The record high demand for assistance has the humane society turning to the community for some added financial help. The organization is asking those who can to donate or agree to a sponsorship online at www.kwsphumane.ca.
