OPP conducts weekend marine patrols in Grey and Bruce

Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police Marine Unit patrolled local waters during the July 19-21 weekend, ensuring safety and compliance.

Officers covered Lake Eugenia, Chesley Lake, Colpoys Bay, Georgian Bay, and the Oliphant Fishing Islands.

During the patrols, officers inspected almost 200 watercraft, including stand-up paddle boards (SUPs), kayaks, sailboats, and personal watercraft (PWCs). Three paddle board operators were charged for not having safety equipment like lifejackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs). Additionally, one individual received a warning for not carrying a copy of their boat license on board.

The OPP reminds the public that all vessels, including paddle boards, kite boards, kayaks, and canoes, must have the required safety equipment under the Canada Shipping Act. Fines for non-compliance can be costly, and the absence of safety equipment can be life-threatening.
