Tractor finally removed from Seaforth building

Cheers rang out from the gathered crowd, as at long last, a tractor was removed from a downtown Seaforth building.

The tractor ended up there as a result of a collision on October 13, which led to charges against the driver.

Why it remained there for 57 days was a little more complicated.

The repairs were under control of the building owner's insurance company, and due to the building's heritage status and the presence of asbestos, it took a while for crews to have it ready to remove the vehicle.

Taralyn Cronin, Economic Development Officer for Huron East, says it was a tough couple of months for businesses.

"It's really been a negative impact on our downtown businesses, especially the ones that don't have parking in front of their store," she says.

Crowds gathered around noon to get a seat for the show, which Cronin said was expected.

"I mean this has been a big event for the town, so I'm not surprised at the crowd. Hopefully businesses will capitalize on this opportunity," she said.

It took a while to get the corner of the building braced so that the tractor could come out. Once that was in place, workers had to let the air out of tires and edge the machine into position little by little.

Then around 2:40 p.m., the tractor was finally freed.

After nearly being closed for two months, Seaforth's Main street is expected to fully reopen shortly.
