Local health authorities ready to help when schools ready to re-open

The provincial government has announced schools will not be re-opening before summer.

Many of the province’s medical officers of health, including Dr. Miriam Klassen in Huron Perth, have recently advocated for reopening schools.

“We are ready to assist any school re-openings at this time and believe that it is manageable. Having said that, I do recognize that the government must weigh the risks and benefits of many challenging decisions during the pandemic, and it is their decision ultimately to make.”

Dr. Klassen adds schools should be among the last to close and the first to reopen.

“The considerations are not just the risk of disease transmission, but also what are the other risks associated with keeping schools closed. We know that school closures can affect families, and are affecting families, negatively.”

Dr. Klassen says staff will continue to prepare for the safe reopening of schools in the fall.
