The former Markdale Hospital property has officially changed hands, marking what Brightshores Health System is calling an important milestone for the site that has sat vacant since 2023.
The property, which was listed for sale late last year following the opening of the new Markdale Hospital, has now been sold for $550,000, opening the door to future redevelopment in Grey Highlands.
Brightshores says proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into local healthcare.
"Proceeds from this sale will be invested in Brightshores critical health infrastructure as we continue to strengthen care for the communities we serve," President and CEO Ann Ford said.
While the future of the site has not yet been finalized, the Municipality of Grey Highlands says it is ready to work with the new owner on what comes next.
"At this time, we don’t yet have full details on the future plans for the former Markdale hospital lands; however, we look forward to working collaboratively with the new owner(s) in our role as the Municipality of Grey Highlands," said Mayor Paul McQueen.
He added that there was strong interest in the property and called the sale a sign of momentum after several years of vacancy, saying it marks "a new chapter for this site" while also recognizing the hospital’s long-standing role in the community.
Brightshores says it appreciates continued public interest in the property and ongoing support for local healthcare as planning moves into the next phase.
