Do you know the signs of a stroke? Learn them Monday in Stratford

A community health fair set for this week in Stratford aims to educate the public about stroke signs and how to respond to them.

Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance will be hosting the hour-and-a-half session at the Stratford General Hospital on Monday afternoon. Members of the Huron Perth District Stroke Program will provide free screening and information about the serious medical issue to those in attendance.

"Participants will also learn what to do during a stroke, and how to understand their personal health risk factors,” said Joanna Smorhay, the program's manager. “During the fair, participants can also get their blood pressure checked and learn about the treatments for stroke.”

Early recognition of stroke symptoms has been determined to be critical for a timely and successful recovery.

The community fair is being held as part of Stroke Awareness Month. It will run from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the hospital's Education Rooms A and B. Participants will also have a chance to learn about diabetes education and community programs.

“It’s a great opportunity to empower yourself with knowledge,” said Smorhay.
