An investigation by the Special Investigations Unit into injuries suffered by a man during an arrest by the West Grey Police Service has been closed without charges.
The SIU says the 42-year-old man was arrested in Durham on August 26, 2025, after police received a complaint from his wife alleging ongoing harassment.
According to the agency, the man attempted to run from the scene during the arrest and “resisted police and was uncooperative” after being caught. Officers used "physical control techniques and a conducted energy weapon" to take him into custody.
The man later complained of pain and was taken to hospital, where he was initially cleared of serious injury. A CT scan performed on September 8 later identified left-side rib fractures.
In its report, the SIU said a forensic pathologist determined it was "highly unlikely" the fractures were connected to the arrest, noting the scan showed "no evidence of a healing response:" that would have been expected if the injuries occurred on August 26.
Deputy Director Stacey O’Brien concluded no WGPS officer was responsible for the man’s injury and said there was "nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer."
