Members of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation are being told to steer clear of Hope Bay following a diesel spill.
The Environment Office posted an advisory about the spill Tuesday afternoon, calling it a "serious concern" as Hope Bay and its connected creeks are important areas where members carry out traditional activities including smelt harvesting.
"At this time, we are advising all members to exercise caution and limit contact with the water and shoreline in this area," the Environment Office said. "Diesel contamination poses risks to the fish, the aquatic habitat, and to human health."
The Environment Office added that it is actively monitoring the situation and is trying to obtain comprehensive information on the containment and cleanup efforts. No details about how the spill occurred have been released.
Anyone who has recently been in the area and seen sheen on the water, detected a strong odour, or spotted affected wildlife is asked to call the Environment Office.
