Brightshores Health System is promoting Be a Donor Month throughout April to ensure people in Grey-Bruce understand the life saving and life changing impact of organ and tissue donation.
Health officials say the numbers underscore just how significant that choice can be. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, while a single tissue donor can improve the quality of life for as many as 75 people.
That impact is being felt in Grey and Bruce counties. During the 2025–2026 year, Brightshores Health System supported 27 organ and tissue donors and their families, with each decision representing generosity during a deeply difficult moment.
“Our team is deeply honoured to be trusted by families during such emotional times,” said Dr. Kseniya Troyan, Brightshores Hospital Donation Physician. “Supporting people through the gift of life is a privilege, something that we approach with great care. By choosing to register as a donor, individuals can bring hope to other families and create a lasting impact well beyond their own journey.”
Be a Donor Month serves as a reminder that registering as a donor is a simple step that can leave a lasting legacy. In Ontario, anyone aged 16 or older with a valid health card can register their consent online or in person at a ServiceOntario location.
Brightshores is also being recognized for its efforts to support donation and transplantation. The organization recently received a Provincial Conversion Rate Award from Trillium Gift of Life Network, which coordinates organ and tissue donation services across the province.
The conversion rate measures how often potential donors become actual donors, based on how many families agree to donation when approached. Hospitals that meet or exceed the provincial target of 63 per cent are recognized for helping save more lives through donation.
Health leaders say the recognition reflects not only the work of hospital staff, but also the compassion of families who choose to give the gift of life.
As Be a Donor Month continues, residents are being encouraged to have conversations with loved ones about their wishes and to consider registering.
