Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers jointly announced over $1 million in local transit funding for their ridings this week.
Thompson and Vickers released the joint announcement on Tuesday. The media release shares that this funding is through the 2025-26 Gas Tax program, and can be "used for local public transit initiatives such as expanding service hours, increasing routes, purchasing new vehicles and improving accessibility to increase transit ridership."
Hanover, Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Southgate, and West Grey are all sharing just over $740,000 for the Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART).
The Municipality of Meaford is getting just over $65,000 for Meaford Moves. Finally, the City of Owen Sound is getting over $245,000 for Owen Sound Transit.
"Reliable and accessible public transit is needed to keep our rural and urban communities connected, and this funding is another example on how our government is continuing to invest in rural Ontario," Thompson said.
"Many alternative mobility options available to residents of Ontario's rural municipalities are made possible because of the provincial gas tax," added Vickers. "I am glad that our government continues to support this important initiative, to support Meaford Moves, Owen Sound Transit, and Saugeen Mobility into the future."
