Flood watch issued for towns in Saugeen watershed

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for all municipalities in its watershed.

According to the conservation authority, the watershed received up to 23 millimetres of rain overnight Friday, and an additional 10 mm is on the way Saturday.

Water levels are expected to continue rising throughout the day resulting in flooding of typical low-lying areas. Larger watercourses will be slower to respond and may not reach peak water levels until Sunday or Monday.

More rain is forecast mid-week, meaning water levels are expected to remain high.

The SVCA warns the public to exercise caution near all watercourses.

The advisory applies to the municipalities of Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Grey Highlands, Kincardine, Morris-Turnberry, South Bruce and West Grey, as well as the towns of Chatsworth, Hanover, Howick, Huron-Kinloss, Minto, Wellington North, Saugeen Shores, and Southgate.

The Flood Watch does not require municipalities to take emergency action, but SVCA encourages municipal staff to continue monitoring low-lying and flood prone areas.

This message will remain in effect until Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. unless updated otherwise.

Residents can report flooding in their area at the SVCA website.
