Huron County giving start-up money to student entrepreneurs

Business-minded students in Huron County can now apply for seed money to get their start-ups off the ground this summer.

Huron County has opened the application process for the 2026 summer company program. Up to a dozen students, aged 15 to 29, will be selected this year to launch their own companies using up to $3,000 in funding from the county. Successful applicants will also be offered business training and mentorship.

“Summer Company is a practical way for students to turn a business idea into a real, working summer business,” said Tricia Denomme, business advisor with the Huron Business Centre. “Whether you’re starting from a hobby or a problem you want to solve, we’ll help you build a clear plan, understand your numbers, and feel supported as you learn what it takes to run a business.”

The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on May 15. Students are required to submit an online application form and may be contacted for an interview prior to final approval. Those selected to participate in the program will be matched with a mentor/advisor, receive basic business training and be given access to business supports and promotional materials.

To help cover the cost of the start-up, $1,500 will be given to each selected student. The remaining $1,500 is provided at the end of the summer upon completion of the program.

Eligibility criteria and the application form can be found on the county's website.

The program is being offered in partnership with the provincial government and the McCall MacBain Foundation.
