Midwestern Ontarians are ending the year in a wintry mess.
Lake effect snow is continuing to pummel the region for a third straight day with Environment Canada warning an additional 20 to 40 centimetres of snowfall is expected Wednesday into Thursday.
"Snow squalls are expected to be fairly stationary, bringing the potential for significant accumulating snow," the national weather agency stated. "Winds have eased off and blowing snow is less of a concern."
An orange-level snow squall warning is in effect for Huron County, Perth County, Grey County, southern Bruce County, and the Bruce Peninsula. A yellow-level snow squall warning is in place for north Wellington County.
Travel will again be extremely hazardous throughout the region with many routes already deemed impassable. Highway 21 between Amberley and Port Elgin has been closed since Monday, as has Highway 4 between Wingham and Teeswater. A full list of road closures can be found at CKNXNewsToday.ca/closures.
Anyone who encounters a road that is closed is reminded not to go around the closure sign as OPP remind that doing so is not only dangerous it can lead to charges and fines. Earlier this week a bus driver was allegedly caught doing so twice in less than 24 hours on a road near Kincardine. The 45-year-old driver is facing two counts of driving on a closed highway, police said.
