Owen Sound removes hazardous trees

The City of Owen Sound is moving ahead with the removal of hazardous trees flagged as top priorities through its updated municipal tree inventory. The work is set to start right away, subject to weather conditions, and will be completed by Mulmur Tree Services, the contractor hired for the program.

The latest inventory found roughly 288 trees rated in the high or very high hazard categories. Many of these trees are affected by structural weaknesses, damage from the emerald ash borer, or significant decline, creating increased risks to public safety and nearby property.

Tree removals will begin in locations where work can be carried out safely during this time of year, such as ravines and areas with limited impacts on residents and traffic. As conditions improve, crews will gradually expand into neighbourhoods and other high-traffic or high-use areas.

Property owners living next to trees scheduled for removal will be contacted directly by the contractor before any work takes place. Advance notice will also be provided whenever removals are planned near private property.

The City thanks residents for their understanding as this necessary work is undertaken to protect public safety and maintain a healthy urban forest. Anyone who has concerns about trees on City-owned land is encouraged to submit them through the Report a Concern – Tree Issue form available on the City of Owen Sound’s website.
