Men charged in Sharif Rahman's death to appear in Owen Sound court

The three men charged in the 2023 death of Owen Sound restaurant owner Sharif Rahman will appear in local court on Friday.

Robert Evans Jr., 25, Robert Busby Evans, 47, and Barry Evans, 54 were extradited from the United Kingdom and escorted back to Ontario by Owen Sound police and OPP officers on Thursday.

Evans Jr. is charged with manslaughter in Rahman's death. The other two men, Evans Jr.'s father and uncle, are each charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence.

Rahman, 44, was assaulted outside of his restaurant on 2nd Avenue East while trying to stop an alleged dine-and-dash on August 17, 2023. He died from his injuries in London hospital a week later.

Investigators determined the suspects fled the country to Scotland following the incident. They worked with international law enforcement to coordinate the overseas arrest of the three men. The 25-year-old and 47-year-old were arrested in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 30, 2024. The 54-year-old was arrested in Dalkeith, Scotland on October 29, 2024.

"We are aware of the impact this investigation has had on the victim's family and the local community," police said in a statement released late Thursday. "We are also deeply grateful to everyone who came forward with information to assist police during the investigation."

Police also credited RCMP, International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), Ottawa Fugitive Apprehension Support Team and U.K. law enforcement members from the National Extradition Unit of the National Crime Agency and Police Scotland for their assistance in the investigation.

With the case now before the courts, police said they will not be providing any additional information on the investigation.
