The Municipality of Grey Highlands is taking steps toward the development of a new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) regional facility in Markdale — a move aimed at strengthening public safety infrastructure across the region.
At its most recent meeting, Grey Highlands Council unanimously approved a motion directing staff to begin negotiations with partners and stakeholders on the process for building the new detachment. Staff were also instructed to prepare a comprehensive sustainable project analysis to assess the financial, operational, and community impacts before the municipality proceeds.
Mayor Paul McQueen said the decision demonstrates Council’s dedication to safety and careful planning for the community’s future.
"This direction from Council reflects our commitment to public safety and the future of Grey Highlands," he added. "We look forward to receiving a detailed analysis from staff that will guide our next steps and ensure the best outcomes for our residents and neighbouring communities.”
The proposed facility would serve as a reporting centre for policing services across Grey and Bruce counties, supporting multiple municipalities and potentially expanding service in the future.
Municipal officials stated that the project is expected to be revenue-neutral for Grey Highlands, meaning it will not result in additional costs to local taxpayers.
