Owen Sound woman charged after protest outside defence industry conference

An Owen Sound woman is accused of busting the electronic locks off the doors of a defence industry conference held in London earlier this week.

According to police, a woman, who was wearing a mask, used a hammer to smash the locks on the front doors of RBC Place London, the city's convention centre, where the conference was being held on Tuesday. When approached by police officers, the woman reportedly ran off into a crowd of protesters who had gathered outside the building. Officers were able to catch up to the woman who resisted when she was told she was under arrest, police said.

A 34-year-old woman from Owen Sound is charged with mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, resisting arrest, and disguise with intent. The woman has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charges on December 4.

The incident occurred during a large protest that also saw entrances blocked, the parking garage barricaded with construction materials, and paint thrown on staff. The commotion led to the streets around the convention centre being closed for nearly two hours.

Damage to the building is estimated at $32,000.

Investigators are working to identify other protesters who were in attendance at the event, police said.
