OPSEU reaches out to colleges to jumpstart bargaining

The union representing full-time Ontario college support staff has announced it has "re-engaged negotiations".

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents support staff at Ontario's 24 publicly funded colleges, announced on Thursday afternoon that it has invited the College Employer Council (CEC) to return to the bargaining table.

Christine Kelsey, OPSEU's chair of the bargaining team, said the situation is getting more precarious.

"We have been out on the line for just shy of a month. The situation is reaching a boiling point," said Kelsey. "Students can’t access critical services we provide, including accessibility supports, and convocations are being cancelled. The semester is slipping away. We need to get back to our work supporting students. For their sake, we hope the CEC can walk this path with us towards a resolution."

Support staff at the colleges, including Lambton, Georgian, St. Clair, and Fanshawe, walked off the job on September 11. Job security and wages are the key sticking points.

About 10,000 full-time staff have been affected. They include technicians and technologists, clerks, assistants, analysts, tutors, and facilities operators.
