The City of Owen Sound has announced demolition will commence for non-heritage buildings and structures at the former Owen Sound Courthouse and Jail.
The move is part of a proposed redevelopment by FC Entertainment and Hospitality to revitalize the space as an event venue. The venue will be supported by on-site restaurants, drinking establishments, indoor and outdoor entertainment facilities, and overnight accommodations.
The city says the Site Plan Approval process is currently underway.
The demolition work will include removing: a single-story garage attached to the north side of the Governor’s Residence; fire escapes, exterior stairwells, and accessory buildings within the southern jail yard and to the rear of the Governor’s Residence; non-original additions to the north and south side of the 1854 Jail; and minor interior non-structural partitions.
The former courthouse is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, while the jail property and Governor’s Residence are listed on the city’s heritage register.
