Revitalized community centre in Brussels to officially open Saturday

Huron East residents will get their first look at the revamped Brussels Morris and Grey Community Centre this weekend.

A grand opening event is planned for 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the facility at 800 Sports Dr. in Brussels. Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson, as well as other local dignitaries, will be on hand for the event which will feature open house tours from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The revitalization of the centre included the construction of modern dressing rooms, upgraded washrooms, a new lobby, a fitness gym, and a new viewing area. The new facilities were added to support existing programs and to allow for the addition of new activities in the future.

Funding for the $8.4 million facelift and expansion came from all three levels of government. The federal government gave $1,915,200, while the provincial government kicked in 1,595,840. An additional $1,889,700 came from the Municipality of Huron East and $469,900 from the Municipality of Morris-Turnberry. A community fundraising campaign brought in more than $2.5 million in donations for the project.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support from Provincial and Federal governments, which has allowed us to realize this vision,” Mayor Bernie MacLellan said in a statement. “This project reflects our dedication to enhancing the quality of life in our community, making recreational activities more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

Saturday's grand opening event will include youth hockey games, a sledge hockey exhibition, a 7 p.m. matchup between the Wingham Ironmen and Fergus Whalers, as well as Euchre and pickleball tournaments.

More information about upcoming programs being offered at the community centre can be found at www.huroneast.com.
