Bus fares rising in Owen Sound

It will cost more to ride the city bus in Owen Sound.

This week, council approved an increase city transit fares by 25 cents and monthly passes by $2.50, meaning adult and senior fares will cost $3.25 and student fares will rise to $2.75.

Adult passes will rise to $72.50, student passes to $37.50 and senior passes to $57.50.

A newly introduced day pass will be $9, a new 10-ride pass will be $27, and a semester pass will be $165.

Councillor Carol Merton says they hope to make bus passes more accessible.

"Additional strategies, including adding a day pass option, a ten pass option, a semester Pass option, and to continue the affordable affordability pass are coming forward, " added Merton. "Staff will explore options for expanding the availability of transit passes at additional outlets across Owen Sound similar to the network used for garbage bag tag sales, popular passenger destinations such as the hospital, the mall and Georgian College could also be considered potential locations of note."

The affordability pass will be the same price as the senior pass.

Merton said 52,506 riders have boarded the bus since January 1, 20204. That's up by 20,615 from 2023.

In 2016, the city's actual cost was $2.92 per ride, which jumped to $3.61 in 2023. However, bus fares had not increased since 2015.
