People can learn more about creating a Dementia-Friendly Community during an information session at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library.
Municipal workers, first responders, businesses, organizations, and the general public will learn how a dementia friendly community provides access and support so people can age in place and remain active community members.
Speakers include a care partner, Christina Maclean, who will share her experience in supporting her spouse with dementia, and a Public Education Coordinator with Alzheimer Society Grey Bruce, Sandra Hong, who will talk about how to become a dementia-friendly community. Owen Sound Police Department Community Service Officer Jason Cranny will be providing an overview of protocols and how the service supports citizens living with dementia.
The Alzheimer Society Grey Bruce is co-hosting the event, while will be held on Wednesday, October 23 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Library.
"A dementia-friendly community is a place where people living with dementia and their care partners are welcomed, included, and supported," a media release from the library said. "The community pays attention to the social and physical needs of those living with dementia, addressing barriers that often cause them to withdraw from community interaction and suffer a diminished quality of life."
