In a big stride for accessibility, floating wheelchairs are now available for day use at select Saugeen Shores beaches.
The WaterWheels chairs can be booked for free, either through the Town’s website for self service booking or using the QR code available at rental locations. The chairs will be available from now until Labour Day.
"Saugeen Shores is continually looking to provide equal access to its amenities and facilities for residents and visitors, regardless of age or ability,” said Mayor Charbonneau. “These floating wheelchairs, alongside our mobility mats, help ensure that everyone has the chance to enjoy our beautiful Lake Huron waters."
The Port Elgin chair can be found at Port Elgin Harbour Office, while Southampton's is located at the Long Dock Beach Access parking lot.
There are two booking periods available per day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 to 5 p.m. Individuals can book the wheelchair for two consecutive periods when available.
The town says there are accessible beach mats at each location to assist with mobility to the water.
