Farm land tax ratio becoming Southwestern Ontario issue

Huron County's Warden expects the issue of tax ratios for agricultural land will come up at County Council again this year.

Jim Ginn says the County decided last year against reducing tax rates on farm land to help reduce the impact of increasing assessment on farm properties.

"A very high percentage of our tax base is residential and so essentially, if you move it away from the farm land, so drop that tax rate and it's got to be picked elsewhere and that's most likely to fall heavily on the residential side."

Ginn notes it was only a few years ago when lakefront property values increased dramatically.

"If you can recall, a lot of the cottages went sky-high in prices and you know, as a result they had to pick up a lot of the percentage of the burden, and now we're seeing it go the other way where it's maybe moving away from the lakefront and more onto agricultural land."

But he adds, the tax rates tend to be cyclical, and over a long period of time usually average out.
