An early morning fire has completely destroyed a barn and a large number of livestock just north of Auburn in Huron County.
Members of the North Huron Fire Department from both Blyth and Wingham, along with support from the Goderich and Lucknow Fire Departments, were called just after 2am Saturday morning to Westfield Road and Hoover Line.
Upon arrival, the 10,000 square foot pig barn was fully engulfed in flames.
"640 pigs were in the barn at the time of the fire," says North Huron Fire Chief, David Sparling.
All 640 of those pigs that were inside the barn at the time perished in the blaze.
As for the cause of the fire, no determination has yet been made and the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified and will assist in the investigation.
"We will be doing a more thorough investigation but based on the amount of damage it'll be pretty hard to determine what started this," adds Sparling.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire and damage is estimated to be more than $1 million dollars.
