A pair of tennis courts in south London are getting a makeover, thanks to a grant from Tennis Canada.
The twin tennis courts at White Oaks Park were selected for the revitalization project through the National Bank Play Your Court Program. Launched in 2022, the program will see up to $3 million distributed to various cities and municipalities across Canada to upgrade more than 100 courts by 2030. The exact dollar figure awarded to London was not disclosed.
“As an organization, we are committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to play and enjoy the game of tennis," said Michael Downey, chief executive officer of Tennis Canada. "Through our partnership with National Bank, we continue to make strides towards creating a more positive playing experience and making tennis even more accessible for all Canadians.”
The funding being given to London will be used to resurface the White Oaks Park courts, as well as add new posts, nets, fencing, seating, and signage.
"This improvement will benefit over 100,000 residents in southwest London," said Mayor Josh Morgan. "The upgrades also align with our Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the objective to create better quality tennis courts due to the high demand of the sport in London.”
The courts will be open for play this summer, with an official opening ceremony slated for next spring.
