Driver Nabbed With Fake Police Light

Provincial police nabbed an impatient driver who was allegedly using red and blue police lights to get other motorists to move out of his way on Hwy. 401 west of London.

Elgin OPP stopped a personal SUV on the highway near Dutton around 5pm on Saturday. The 59-year-old male driver from London told officers he was using the flashing police light to "get vehicles to move out of the way."

The light was seized and the driver was charged.

Under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, only police department vehicles can be equipped with red and blue lights.

In rural areas, drivers may see green flashing lights in personal vehicles. Police remind those lights are used by volunteer firefighters en route to an emergency and drivers who encounter them should move to the shoulder to allow them to pass by.
