Canniff seeking third-term as CK mayor

Chatham-Kent (CK) Mayor Darrin Canniff is looking to keep his job for at least another four years

He announced on Wednesday that he plans to run again in the upcoming election.

Canniff was first elected mayor in 2018, receiving well over half of the votes cast. He won again in 2022, receiving over 75 per cent of the vote.

In a statement, Canniff explained that he wanted to run again to continue the work done during his first two terms.

"Over the past eight years, we've worked hard to change the conversation around Chatham-Kent. We've focused on growth, positivity, investment, and creating opportunities for people and families to build their future right here in our community. Today, more people are choosing Chatham-Kent than they have in decades, and that’s something we should all be proud of," he explained.

If re-elected, Canniff said he would focus on expanding growth across the entire municipality.

"Every community deserves investment and attention. We’ve made significant progress improving infrastructure across rural Chatham-Kent, supporting our downtowns, and helping local businesses succeed, but there is still more work to do," he added.

Canniff also vowed to continue improving the municipality's financial position. He explained that the municipality's debt has been lowered by around $100 million during his time as mayor.

As to why he believes people should trust him for a third term, Canniff pointed to the relationships he has built with the upper levels of government.

"The challenges communities face today require strong advocacy and strong relationships. Over the years, I’ve built connections at Queen’s Park that help ensure Chatham-Kent has a voice at the table. Whether it's fighting for infrastructure funding, addressing homelessness and addictions, or supporting economic growth, I will continue working tirelessly to advocate for our residents and our businesses," he said.

Joining Canniff on the ballot are fellow Councillors Lauren Anderson and Michael Bondy, as well as Wallaceburg farmer Nelson Burm.

CK's election will be on October 26, 2026.
