Municipal World Magazine names Drew Dilkens named 2026 "Mayor of the Year"

Windsor's now former mayor Drew Dilkens has been named Municipal World Magazine's third Mayor of the Year.

The magazine, which publishes monthly, established its Mayor of the Year award in 2024, naming Burlington Mayor Meed Ward in its first year and former Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek last year.

"A lifelong Windsor resident, Dilkens has led the city through a period of significant growth and transformation, helping secure major investments such as the NextStar Energy plant, supporting the development of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, and advancing plans for the Fancsy Family Hospital," said the magazine.

Dilkens recently lost his bid for a fourth term, but served as mayor from 2014 to 2026.

Municipal World has been Canada's leading municipal magazine since 1981, and seeks to inform those in the municipal sector on the latest developments. It examines issues that impact communities, new strategies, and emerging best practices.

The Mayor of the Year is chosen by the magazine's editors who personally interview candidates and do extensive research. It's editorial team noted, "In recent years, Dilkens has advocated for policies that integrated Canada-U.S. supply chains, protected manufacturing jobs, and maintained the efficient movement of goods across the Detroit-Windsor corridor."

"It is such an honour to be selected as Mayor of the Year by Municipal World Inc.," said Dilkens. "Windsor is a city that works. We build things. We fix things. We look after each other, and when something knocks us down, we get up and get on with it."
